Isabel Allegro de Magalhães

Isabel Allegro de Magalhães is a Full Professor of Comparative Literature (FCSH-Universidade Nova de Lisboa), having retired in 2008.  She was a visiting Professor at several foreign universities in Europe and the USA.

She has published around 100 essays and articles in seven languages on her areas of study, and has authored nine books, most notably Para lá das Religiões: Ensaios sobre Religiões e Culturas, Ética, Espiritualidades e Política (2011), Capelas Imperfeitas (2002), O Sexo dos Textos (1995) and O Tempo das Mulheres (2002). She has is also the author of História e Antologia da Literatura Portuguesa [History and Anthology of Portuguese Literature] (from the Middle ages to the 18th century – 4 volumes) published by the Calouste Gukbenkian Foundation (2007-2013).

Prefaced by Eduardo Prado Coelho (Lisbon: 2002). She is a member of GRAAL since 1960. Of particular relevance in her civic and socio-cultural activity are her work as: coordinator and author, with Manuela Silva, of the citizens’ initiative “Manifesto: O nosso Presente e o nosso Futuro: algumas questões prementes” (2009); co-president, with Mário Ruivo, MPPM – Movimento pelos Direitos do Povo Palestino e a Paz no Médio-Oriente [Movement for the Rights of the Palestinian People and Peace in the Middle-East] (2006-2010); as member of the Opinion Court for the evaluation of the following of the decisions made during the EU-Africa Summit and the Civil Society Forum, org. by the Portuguese Non-Governmental Development Organizations (NDGDOs) Platform (2010).  She has been awarded the Prémio Jacinto Prado Coelho, by the Portuguese Association of Literary Critics.
