João Ramalho-Santos is Associate Professor at the Department of Life Sciences, University of Coimbra, Portugal.
He is currently the Head of the Biology of Reproduction and Stem Cells Group at the Centre for Neuroscience and Cell Biology at the University of Coimbra, where he works on the bioenergetics and metabolism of gametes and stem cells.
He is Associate Editor of the Journals Reproduction and Human Reproduction, reviewer for over 30 journals and 6 agencies, and member of the National Ethics Council for the Life Sciences (CNECV).
He is a comic book critic, regularly publishing on JL. He is co-author of books about comics such as As Cidades Visíveis (with João Miguel Lameiras), or Uma Revolução Desenhada: O 25 de Abril e a Banda Desenhada (with João Paulo Paiva Boléo and JM Ladeiras), and of the fiction books A Revolução Interior (with José Carlos Fernandes and JM Ladeiras) and Eden 2.0 (with Luís Louro and JM Ladeiras). In addition to the BD, he has published the novel Portland-Portugal: Um Voo Doméstico, and short stories on scientific topics, on the LabLit.com and on the journal Nature. He was honoured with the award of the US program Frontiers in Reproduction (FIR) of the Marine Biology Laboratory for his contribution in the field of reproductive biology, a distinction never before attributed to a researcher based outside of the United States of America or the United Kingdom.
